This article was written for the proceedings of the ball lightning and cold nuclear transmutation conference. It is a summary of the development of the microplasmoid field and explains how knowing how natural ball lightning and luminescent tornadoes act help us understand the microplasmoids. There are two kinds of 5th state microplasmoids: 5th state patches in materials and flying or moving ball lightning-like microplasmoids. 5th state materials are in at least two states: black and white. There might be grey states that are a gradation between black and white.
